OP: Is this a 2012 NON-retina MacBook Pro 13'? If so, it's could be the internal SATA ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard. The ribbon cable is a 'known weak point' on those models. When it goes bad, proper communication can be interrupted between the internal hard drive and the motherboard - slowing down or not running at all. Do you have a brick-n-mortar Apple Store anywhere nearby? If so, make an appointment for the genius bar and show it to them.

They may replace the ribbon cable for free (there was a replacement program for this, not sure if it's still in effect). Or, you could replace it yourself, it's not very difficult. Go to ifixit.com to see the procedure. They also have the part number. You can buy the ribbon cable from them, or online. IF you do it yourself, it would be a good idea to replace the internal HDD with an SSD while the back is off.

Again, easy to do. USE THE RIGHT TOOLS.
